Student Darcy Webb has been named the winner in a competition to design a sticker for Newcastle-Staffs Foodbank.
Darcy, who attends Betley CE Primary School, chose the message ‘End Hunger’ as the theme for her sticker. Judge artist Ian Mood said this perfectly summed up the work of Newcastle-Staffs Foodbank. The sticker has now been printed for use at all events attended by the foodbank, as a thank you to donors and so supporters can help spread the ‘End Hunger’ message.
Darcy said: “When I was little I had a plate with a love heart on, so I took that idea and made it into a sticker and added a fork and a spoon. I just thought we should say ‘End Hunger’ as that is what foodbanks are about.”
Newcastle-Staffs Foodbank challenged primary schools across Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough to design a sticker that we could give out to those wanting to know more about our work. We received dozens of entries, with Darcy’s design taking first prize as it encompassed our vision of a more dignified, more just and more compassionate society where everyone can afford life’s basic essentials such as food. As well as seeing her design made up into a sticker, Darcy was presented with a certificate, a Harry Potter art set and was given a tour of our foodbank warehouse along with her grandparents. Runner-up prizes of Harry Potter art sets were awarded to two pupils from St John’s CE Primary School in Keele.
Ian, a member of the Society of Staffordshire Artists, said: “I chose Darcy’s End Hunger design as the winner because it perfectly suits the brief with a clear design and strong message. The two runners up I chose as they really nicely communicate the love and care of the foodbank as well as showcasing some lovely looking and well drawn food!”
Jane Baker, project lead for the foodbank, said: “Our ultimate goal is to end the need for foodbanks and to do this we need the support of our community. We work with partners across the borough to ensure nobody goes hungry while at the same time campaigning for change so more people can afford life’s essentials. Our work with primary schools is aimed at dispelling some of the myths about foodbank and raising awareness of the ways we can come together to make life better for our community. Darcy’s sticker is a beautiful way to illustrate the care and compassion our supporters show for each other in Newcastle-under Lyme, as well as our commitment to raising the voices of our clients to help bring about change. Well done Darcy.”
